  4. Brother does not recommend the use of cartridges other than genuine Brother Original cartridges or the refilling of used cartridges with toner from other sources.

Acceptable paper and other print media

Instructions from the manual
Select acceptable paper and print media11 steps
  1. Before buying large quantities, test a small amount.
  2. Use paper made for plain-paper copying.
  3. Tray 1 accepts plain, recycled and thin paper; the manual feed slot also accepts bond, thick paper, labels and envelopes.
  4. Do not mix paper types or sizes in the tray.
  5. Match the application paper size to the loaded paper.
  6. Avoid touching the printed surface immediately.
  7. The manual recommends neutral long-grain copy paper of 75–90 g/m² with approximately 5% moisture.
  8. Tray 1 holds up to 250 sheets of 80 g/m² paper; manual feed holds one sheet.
  9. Tray sizes: A4, Letter, B5 (ISO/JIS), A5, A5 long edge, B6 (ISO), A6 and Executive.
  10. Manual-feed width is 76.2–216 mm and length is 116–406.4 mm.

Handling and using special paper

Instructions from the manual
Avoid unsuitable paper3 steps
  1. Types of paper to avoid IMPORTANT Some types of paper may not perform well or may cause damage to your machine.
  2. DO NOT use paper: that is highly textured that is extremely smooth or shiny that is curled or warped 1 A curl of 2 mm (0.08 in.) or greater may cause jams to occur. that is coated or has a chemical finish that is damaged, creased or folded that exceeds the recommended weight specification in this guide with tabs and staples with letterheads using low temperature dyes or thermography that is multipart or carbonless that is designed for inkjet printing If you use any of the types of paper listed above, they may damage your machine.
  3. This damage is not covered under any Brother warranty or service agreement.

Envelopes

Instructions from the manual
Select suitable envelopes8 steps
  1. Envelopes Most envelopes designed for laser printers will be suitable for your machine.
  2. However, some envelopes may have feed and print-quality problems because of the way they have been made.
  3. A suitable envelope should have edges with straight, well-creased folds and the leading edge should not be thicker than two sheets of paper.
  4. The envelope should lie flat and not be of baggy or flimsy construction.
  5. You should buy quality envelopes from a supplier who understands that you will be using the envelopes in a laser machine.
  6. We recommend that you print a test envelope to make sure the print results are what you want.
  7. Types of envelopes to avoid IMPORTANT DO NOT use envelopes: that are damaged, curled, wrinkled, irregularly shaped, extremely shiny or textured envelopes. with clasps, staples, snaps, tie strings, self-adhesive components, windows, holes, cutouts or perforations. that are of a baggy construction, not sharply creased, embossed (have raised writing on them) or preprinted on the inside. that were previously printed by a laser / LED printer. that cannot be arranged when put in a pile. that are made of paper that weighs more than the paper weight specifications for the machine. with edges that are not straight or consistently square. with glue on surface as shown in figure below with double flaps as shown in figure below with sealing flaps that are not folded down when purchased with sealing flaps as shown in figure below with each side folded as shown in figure below If you use any of the types of envelopes listed above, they may damage your machine.
  8. This damage may not be covered under any Brother warranty or service agreement.

Labels

Instructions from the manual
Select full-sheet laser labels12 steps
  1. Labels The machine will print on most types of labels designed for use with a laser printer.
  2. Labels should have an adhesive that is acrylic-based since this material is more stable at the high temperatures in the fuser unit.
  3. Adhesives should not come in contact with any part of the machine, because the label stock may stick to the drum unit or rollers and cause jams and print quality problems.
  4. No adhesive should be exposed between the labels.
  5. Labels should be arranged so that they cover the entire length and width of the sheet.
  6. Using labels with spaces may result in labels peeling off and causing serious jams or print problems.
  7. All labels used in this machine must be able to withstand a temperature of 200 degrees centigrade (392 degrees Fahrenheit) for a period of 0.1 seconds.
  8. Do not feed a label sheet through the machine more than one time.
  9. Types of labels to avoid Do not use labels that are damaged, curled, wrinkled or an unusual shape.
  10. IMPORTANT Avoid feeding labels with the carrier sheet exposed because your machine will be damaged.
  11. Label sheets should not exceed the paper weight specifications described in this User’s Guide.
  12. Labels exceeding this specification may not feed or print properly and may cause damage to your machine.

Instructions from the manual
Understand drum life and drum replacement warnings15 steps
  1. Drum unit A new drum unit can print approximately 12,000 A4 or Letter size single-sided pages at 1 page / job.
  2. Note There are many factors that determine the actual drum life, such as the temperature, humidity, type of paper, type of toner used, number of pages per print job and so on.
  3. Under ideal conditions, the average drum life is estimated at approximately 12,000 pages.
  4. The actual number of pages that your drum will print may be significantly less than this estimate.
  5. Because we have no control over the many factors that determine the actual drum life, we cannot guarantee a minimum number of pages that will be printed by your drum.
  6. For best performance, use only genuine Brother toner.
  7. The machine should be used only in a clean, dust- free environment with adequate ventilation.
  8. Printing with a non-Brother drum unit may reduce not only the print quality but also the quality and life of the machine itself.
  9. Warranty coverage does not apply to problems caused by the use of a non-Brother drum unit.
  10. DRUM END SOON If the Drum LED flashes, it means the drum unit will need to be replaced soon.

Important information for choosing your paper

Instructions from the manual
Choose and store laser-printer paper7 steps
  1. Before buying a large quantity, check that the paper is suitable for laser printers and test a small quantity.
  2. Brother recommends 75–90 g/m² paper, long-grain fibres and neutralized rather than acid paper.
  3. An acid-paper check pen distinguishes acid from neutral paper.
  4. Check the packaging for the print side and follow its instructions; the opening side of the ream package is usually the print side.
  5. Paper typically contains about 5% water by weight and may absorb about 10% in high humidity, impairing toner fixing.
  6. Brother recommends 50–60% surrounding humidity for storing and using paper.
  7. Unrecommended paper may cause jams or misfeeds.

Brother numbers

Instructions from the manual

Current UK support: drum replacement

Steady REPLACE DRUM indication
For the steady REPLACE DRUM indication (Drum and Ready on), the current exact-model UK support procedure starts with the printer turned on. Leave it at least 10 minutes to cool, then open the front cover. Remove the drum and toner assembly carefully. Use a clean, flat surface with disposable paper underneath; avoid touching electrodes or shaded sensitive parts. Push the green lock lever down and remove the toner cartridge. Unpack a new drum only immediately before installation, and protect it from sunlight and room light. Fit the toner cartridge firmly into the new drum until it clicks and the green lever rises automatically. Reinsert the assembly, leaving the front cover open. Hold Go for about 4 seconds until all four LEDs light, then release it. Close the front cover and confirm that Drum is off. Reset the drum counter only for a new drum, not for toner alone. Do not inhale toner or use ammonia, alcohol, sprays or flammable cleaning substances. Wash toner off hands or clothing immediately with cold water. Brother recommends cleaning when replacing consumables.
Reset only after installing a new drum
A new drum requires a drum-counter reset for Drum End Soon, Replace Drum or Drum Stop. Do not reset the counter during the life of the existing drum: remaining drum life would be inaccurate. If the Drum LED remains on or flashing after the correct reset, contact Brother Customer Service.
