- Gently pull the upper thread to bring the bobbin thread through the needle-plate hole.
- Lay both threads toward the rear under the presser foot.
Adjust thread tension7 steps
- The basic upper-tension setting is 4.
- Turn to a higher number to increase tension, or a lower number to reduce it.
- For straight stitching, balanced top/bottom stitches are normally desired: loose upper tension needs a higher number; overly tight upper tension needs a lower number.
- For zigzag and decorative sewing, a small amount of upper thread should appear on the underside; upper tension should generally be lower than for straight stitching.
- Bobbin tension is factory-set and does not need adjustment.
- No single setting suits every stitch, thread and fabric; the guide states that 90% of sewing falls between 3 and 5.
- Upper thread appearing beneath decorative work gives nicer stitches and less puckering.

Diagram key

Sew a blind hem9 steps
- For curtains, trousers or skirts, choose the shown blind-hem pattern for stretch or firm fabric.
- Set the needle to middle and use the stitch-length and stitch-width ranges illustrated in the reviewed figure.
- Blind hems normally use longer stitch length; choose a narrower width for lighter fabric and wider width for heavier fabric.
- Test first to confirm appropriate settings.
- Turn up the hem to the desired width and press.
- Fold back against the fabric’s right side with the hem’s top edge extending about 7 mm (1/4 inch) to the right of the folded fabric.
- Sew slowly along the fold, letting the needle catch one or two threads of the folded top.
- Unfold and press when finished.
- An optional blind-hem foot from a SINGER retailer can make this easier.
