Tips on using the rechargeable ni-mh battery

Instructions from the manual
Tips on Using the Rechargeable Ni-MH Battery7 steps
  1. Charge before first use and before later use because stored batteries gradually discharge.
  2. While AC or DC is connected, trickle charging offsets that loss; Brother recommends keeping that connection even with a Ni-MH battery fitted.
  3. Charge at 5–40°C.
  4. Darker printing uses more charge, so adjust density in the driver or Utility.
  5. Try refreshing a troublesome battery before replacing it.
  6. For long disuse, remove it and store it somewhere cool without direct sun; refresh and recharge every three to six months.
  7. Also follow the battery’s own instruction manual.

Explaining battery terms

Instructions from the manual
Explaining Battery Terms5 steps
  1. Ni-MH discharge is normal depletion, including during storage.
  2. Refresh fully discharges it so it can recharge to full capacity: hold Power until green and orange flash, or use the Utility refresh options.
  3. Avoid over-discharge by periodic charging.
  4. Refreshing once or twice can restore capacity after inactivity, but the guide says a battery unused for more than a year will not regain its earlier capacity.
  5. Trickle charging while AC or DC is connected offsets slow self-discharge.

Installing the rechargeable li-ion battery

Instructions from the manual
Installing the Rechargeable Li-ion Battery5 steps
  1. Release and remove the cover.
  2. Put the removal ribbon inside the compartment, move the Li-ion battery’s slide switches inward and insert it.

  2. A new fully charged battery can print about 300 pages, and a full charge can take up to 180 minutes.
  3. For in-printer charging, turn the printer off and confirm the Li-ion battery is fitted, then connect the specified AC adapter and cord or DC cable to the battery’s AC/DC connector.
  4. The battery light is orange while charging and goes out when fully charged.
  5. The User’s Guide also explicitly allows charging the battery removed from the printer: connect that same specified power source to the battery; the orange and off indications are the same.

Stopping the rechargeable li-ion battery charging

Stopping the Rechargeable Li-ion Battery ChargingView
Disconnect the AC power cord or DC cable from the battery AC/DC connector to stop Li-ion charging.

Tips on using the rechargeable li-ion battery

Instructions from the manual
Tips on Using the Rechargeable Li-ion Battery5 steps
  1. Charge before first use at 0–40°C; outside that range charging does not occur and the battery light stays on.
  2. Darker printing drains more charge.
  3. Li-ion batteries do not need refreshing or trickle charging.
  4. When the printer is used with battery and AC/DC connected, the auto-off timer can switch the printer off and allow charging, but charging can stop without a full charge.
  5. Charging stops after a maximum of 180 minutes; a vehicle outlet may not supply enough voltage to reach full charge in that time.

Rechargeable li-ion battery characteristics

Instructions from the manual
Rechargeable Li-ion Battery Characteristics5 steps
  1. Avoid hot or cold storage and use; high temperature with at least 90% charge accelerates deterioration.
  2. To reduce deterioration during printing, disconnect AC/DC while using the fitted Li-ion battery.
  3. The guide recommends trying to discharge it fully before recharging.
  4. For long disuse, remove it at 50% charge or less and store it cool without direct sun.
  5. Recharge every six months and observe its own manual.

Rechargeable battery overview

Instructions from the manual
Rechargeable Battery Overview3 steps
  1. The Ni-MH option mounts inside the printer and charges there, supports printing while charging, trickle charging and refresh, takes about 120 minutes to charge, and yields about 70 pages per charge.
  2. The Li-ion option mounts externally, has its own charger circuitry, supports printing while charging and charging removed from the printer, does not use trickle charge or refresh, takes about 180 minutes, and yields about 300 pages.
