Unplug when not in use.
The foot control regulates sewing speed.
If unsure about connection, consult a qualified electrician.
Press the main switch to I for power and light.
A polarized plug has one wider blade and fits only one way: if it does not fit fully, reverse it; if it still does not fit, have a qualified electrician install the proper outlet.
Never modify the plug.
Raise the two-step presser foot lifter2 steps
For several layers or thick fabric, raise the foot to its higher position to place the work easily.
The machine is adjusted for normal room temperature; extreme heat and cold can affect stitching.
Identify standard and optional accessories2 steps
Standard accessories: all-purpose foot, zipper foot, buttonhole foot, button sewing foot, L-screwdriver, seam ripper/brush, two spool-pin felts, three needles, edge/quilting guide, four Singer Class 15 bobbins, darning plate and soft cover.
For additional optional feet, attachments or accessories, consult Singer.
Threading the machine
Instructions from the manual
Wind the bobbin9 steps
Put thread and spool-pin felt on the spool pin.
Draw thread through the upper guide and clockwise around the bobbin-winder tension discs.
Thread the bobbin as illustrated and put it on the spindle.
Move the spindle right, hold the thread end and press the foot control.
Release after a few turns, release the thread and cut close to the spool as the manual states.
Press again.
When full, the spool rotates slowly: release the pedal and cut the thread.
Move the spindle left and remove the bobbin.
While the spindle is in winding position, the machine cannot sew and the handwheel will not turn; move it left to sewing position to resume sewing.
Insert or remove the bobbin5 steps
Switch off before inserting or removing the bobbin and fully raise the needle.
Open the hinged cover, pull the bobbin-case tab and remove the case.
Hold it in one hand and insert the bobbin with thread running clockwise.
Pull thread through the slit and under the finger, leaving a six-inch tail.
Hold the case by its hinged latch and insert it into the shuttle.
Thread the upper thread8 steps
Switch off for needle threading.
Turn the handwheel toward you counterclockwise to raise the needle fully, with its mark directly up; raise the foot to release the tension discs.
Put thread and felt on the spool pin.
Draw thread through the upper guide and around the next guide as illustrated.
Lead down the right tension channel and up the left while holding thread between spool and guide.
At the top, pass right to left through the slotted take-up eye, then down again.
Pass behind the thin wire needle-clamp guide and thread the needle front to back.
Pull about six to eight inches beyond the eye to the rear and trim with the built-in cutter.
Complete upper-thread path and numbered detail panels. Switch off for needle threading; begin with the needle fully raised and foot up.

a: Spool-pin felt.
Raise the bobbin thread4 steps
Hold the upper thread in the left hand.
Turn the handwheel toward you counterclockwise to lower then raise the needle.
If raising bobbin thread is difficult, check that the hinged cover or removable table is not trapping it.
Gently pull the upper thread to bring bobbin thread through the needle-plate hole; lay both threads back beneath the foot.
Adjust and assess thread tension8 steps
Basic upper tension is 4.
Turn up a number to increase or down to reduce.
Loose straight-stitch tension needs a higher number; tight tension needs a lower number.
Normal zigzag/decorative tension leaves a little upper thread on the underside.
Factory-set bobbin tension needs no adjustment.
No setting suits every stitch, thread and fabric.
Balanced top/bottom stitches usually suit straight construction sewing; the manual states 90 percent of sewing is between 3 and 5.
Zigzag/decorative tension generally needs less than straight stitching; a little upper thread beneath the fabric improves appearance and reduces puckering.
Sewing
Instructions from the manual
Choose a stitch patternView
Turn the pattern selector in either direction to choose a stitch. The manual marks straight stitch with straight-line symbols and zigzag stitch with zigzag symbols.
M2100 pattern selector and reverse lever; complete lettered control key. The lower decorative stitch strip is omitted because the manual does not name every pattern.
Diagram key
a: Pattern selector dial.
b: Reverse sewing lever.
Sew a straight stitchView
Select straight stitch. Put fabric under the foot with its edge at the desired needle-plate seam guide. Lower the foot lifter, then press the foot control to sew.
Secure a seam with reverse sewingView
Press the reverse lever and sew a few reverse stitches to secure the beginning and end of a seam. Release it to sew forward again.
Remove finished workView
Turn the handwheel toward you counterclockwise until the take-up lever is highest and the needle begins descending. Raise the foot and remove work behind the needle and foot.
Cut the threadView
Pull threads beneath and behind the foot. Guide them beside the face plate into cutter B, then pull down to cut.
Sew a blind hem6 steps
Choose the illustrated blind-hem stitch for stretch or firm fabric.
Always test first; this technique takes practice.
Turn up to the desired width and press, then fold back against the right side so the top hem edge extends about 7 mm (1/4 inch) to the right of the fold.
Sew slowly along the fold so the needle just catches one or two fabric threads.
Unfold and press.
An optional blind-hem foot from a Singer retailer can make this easier.
Sew a four-step buttonhole10 steps
Switch off to change feet.
Replace the all-purpose foot with the buttonhole foot.
Measure button diameter and thickness, add 0.3 cm (1/8 inch) for bartacks and mark the length.
Align the foot marking with the start mark, lower it and align the fabric centerline with the foot center.
Test on the same fabric because density varies.
Follow the illustrated four-step sequence with the selector: first sew the first side in the illustrated arrow direction, second sew the top bartack, third sew the other side in the illustrated arrow direction, fourth sew the bottom bartack.
Raise the needle before every selector change and avoid excessive stitches at steps 2 and 4.
Cut open from both ends toward the middle with the seam ripper.
Slightly reduce upper tension for better results; use stabilizer for fine/stretch fabrics.
Heavy thread or cord is advisable for stretch/knit fabric, with zigzag stitching over it as illustrated.
Complete four-step buttonhole settings, foot, sequence and corded variant. Raise the needle before changing selector steps. Directions are shown by the original arrows.
Diagram key
1: Sew the first side in the upward direction shown in the diagram.
2: Sew the top bartack; avoid too many stitches.
3: Sew the other side in the downward direction shown in the diagram.
4: Sew the bottom bartack; avoid too many stitches.
a: Marked buttonhole length: button diameter and thickness plus 0.3 cm (1/8 inch).
b: Align the marked fabric centerline with the foot center and the foot marking with the starting fabric mark.
A: Heavy thread or cord is advisable for stretch or knit fabric; zigzag over it as illustrated.
Sew on buttons9 steps
Switch off for foot changes.
Fit the darning plate and change to the button sewing foot.
Put work beneath the foot, place the button and lower the foot.
Select the second zigzag pattern shown; its width should match the holes.
Turn the handwheel toward you to verify the needle passes both holes without striking the button.
Slowly sew about ten stitches.
Bring tails behind the work and tie manually.
For a shank, put a darning needle on top and sew.
For four-hole buttons, sew the front pair first, push work forward and sew the rear pair.
Sew zippers and piping4 steps
Switch off for foot changes and fit the zipper foot, choosing its right or left attachment according to the sewing side.
Select the illustrated straight stitch.
To pass the tab, lower the needle into fabric, raise the foot and push the tab behind it; lower the foot and sew on.
A length of cord can also be sewn inside a bias strip to form a welt or piping.
Free-motion darn and stipple9 steps
The darning/embroidery foot is optional and not supplied.
Switch off before changing the foot/shank.
Install the darning plate, remove the shank and attach the optional foot to the bar with lever a behind needle-clamp screw b.
Press firmly from behind with the index finger and tighten screw c.
Sew around the hole edge to secure threads.
Work the first row left to right, turn the work 90 degrees and sew over the previous stitching.
A hoop is recommended.
The internal feed system is not used: the operator controls fabric movement and must coordinate it with sewing speed.
For stippling, select straight stitch; the optional foot helps guide meandering small curves to join fabric and batting layers.
