Balancing top thread tension
Instructions from the manualBalancing top thread tension4 steps
- For straight seams, the top and bobbin threads should interlock between the two fabric layers.
- Set the tension dial at its mark.
- A higher dial number tightens needle-thread tension; a lower number loosens it.
- For better zigzag, make top tension slightly looser than bobbin tension: a little top thread should appear on the underside, while bobbin thread should not appear on top.
Needle, thread and fabric chart
Instructions from the manualNeedle, thread and fabric chart5 steps
- Use the same thread size and type in the top supply and bobbin.
- Select needle and thread to suit the fabric before each project.
- Light fabrics—voile, organza, organdy, chiffon and tricot: fine silk, cotton or polyester thread; needle size 9 or 12.
- Medium fabrics—linen, cotton, rayon, wool and double knit: cotton, polyester or all-purpose thread; needle size 12 or 14.

- If the pattern compresses, turn the length dial toward +; if it stretches out, turn toward −.
- Fabric type can affect forward/reverse-feed balance.
Stitch length dial
Instructions from the manualStitch length dialView
A higher number makes a longer stitch. At 0 the machine does not feed the fabric.
Useful sewing tips
Instructions from the manualUseful sewing tips9 steps
- Test on the same fabric, thread, stitch type and number of layers as the project; try widths and lengths and check tension before choosing the best result.
- To turn a corner, stop, turn the handwheel toward you to lower the needle into the fabric, lift the foot, pivot around the needle, lower the foot and continue.
- For curves, stop and change direction slightly.
- With zigzag curves, shorten stitch length for a finer stitch.
- If thick fabric does not fit, lift the foot to its highest position before placing the fabric.
- For elastic fabric or material prone to skipped stitches, use a ballpoint needle and longer stitch; add stabilizer if needed.
- Lightweight stabilizer can also help slippery thin fabric or silk.
- Baste stretch fabrics first, then sew without stretching.
- Use the free arm for trousers, cuffs and confined areas.
