Raise the bobbin thread5 steps
  1. Hold the upper thread in your left hand.
  2. Turn the handwheel toward you (counterclockwise), lowering then raising the needle.
  3. If the bobbin thread is difficult to raise, check that it is not trapped by the hinged cover or removable extension table.
  4. Gently pull the upper thread to bring the bobbin thread through the needle-plate hole.
  5. Lay both threads toward the rear under the presser foot.
Adjust thread tension6 steps
  1. The basic upper-tension setting is 4.
  2. Turn to a higher number to increase tension, or a lower number to reduce it.
  3. For straight stitching, balanced top/bottom stitches are normally desired: loose upper tension needs a higher number; overly tight upper tension needs a lower number.
  4. For zigzag and decorative sewing, a small amount of upper thread should appear on the underside; upper tension should generally be lower than for straight stitching.
  5. No single setting suits every stitch, thread and fabric; the guide states that 90% of sewing falls between 3 and 5.
  6. Upper thread appearing beneath decorative work gives nicer stitches and less puckering.
Test and adjust bobbin thread tension5 steps
  1. Remove the bobbin case and bobbin and suspend it by the thread.
  2. Jerk it once or twice.
  3. Correct tension lets the thread unwind about one or two inches; no unwinding means it is too tight, and dropping too much means it is too loose.
  4. Adjust by turning the small screw on the side of the bobbin case.
  5. Switch off for bobbin removal, as required by the bobbin-insertion instructions.

Sewing

Instructions from the manual
Choose a stitch patternView
Turn the pattern-selector dial in either direction to select a stitch. The manual labels a as the pattern-selector dial and b as the reverse-sewing lever.
Sew a straight stitch3 steps
  1. Select straight stitch.
  2. Put the fabric under the presser foot with its edge aligned to the desired seam guideline on the needle plate.
  3. Lower the presser-foot lifter, then press the foot control to sew.
Secure a seam with reverse sewingView
At the beginning and end of a seam, press the reverse lever and sew a few reverse stitches. Release the lever to resume forward sewing.
Remove the work2 steps
  1. Turn the handwheel toward you (counterclockwise) until the take-up lever reaches its highest position and the needle begins descending.
  2. Raise the presser foot and remove the work behind the needle and foot.
Cut the threadView
Pull the threads under and behind the presser foot, guide them beside the face plate into the thread cutter and pull down to cut.
Sew a blind hem6 steps
  1. The blind-hem pattern is for stretch fabrics.
  2. Always make a sewing test first.
  3. Turn the hem up to the required width and press.
  4. Fold it back against the fabric’s right side, leaving about 7 mm (1/4 inch) of the hem’s top edge projecting to the right of the fold, as illustrated.
  5. Sew slowly on the fold so the needle just catches one or two fabric threads.
  6. Unfold and press when finished.
Sew a lingerie stitch4 steps
  1. Turn the hem up to the required width and press.
  2. Place the fabric right side up with the hem edge to the left.
  3. Sew so the needle swings off the left fabric edge to make a small scallop.
  4. Slightly tighter tension makes a deeper scallop.
Sew a four-step buttonhole11 steps
  1. Switch off for changing the foot.
  2. Replace the all-purpose foot with the buttonhole foot.
  3. Add the button diameter, thickness and 0.3 cm (1/8 inch) for bartacks to determine buttonhole length; mark it on the fabric.
  4. Align the foot marking with the starting fabric mark, then lower the foot with the marked buttonhole center aligned to the foot center.
  5. Always test on the intended fabric because density varies.
  6. Follow the illustrated four-step sequence using the pattern dial; raise the needle before turning to the next step.
  7. Avoid too many stitches in steps 1 and 3.
  8. Cut the buttonhole from both ends toward the middle with the seam ripper.
  9. Slightly reduced upper tension improves results.
  10. Use stabilizer for fine or stretchy fabrics.
  11. For stretch or knit fabric, heavy thread or cord is advisable; sew zigzag over it.
Sew on buttons8 steps
  1. Install the darning plate.
  2. Position the work and button, then lower the foot.
  3. Select a zigzag pattern, corresponding to the button-hole spacing.
  4. Turn the handwheel to check that the needle enters both holes without striking the button.
  5. Sew slowly for about 10 stitches.
  6. Bring the thread tails to the back and tie them manually.
  7. For a shank, place a darning needle on top of the button while sewing.
  8. For four-hole buttons, sew the front pair first, push the work forward, then sew the back pair.
Sew zippers and piping4 steps
  1. Use the illustrated straight-stitch setting.
  2. Switch off to change to the zipper foot; attach it right or left according to the sewing side.
  3. To pass the zipper tab, lower the needle into the fabric, raise the foot, push the tab behind it, lower the foot and continue.
  4. The zipper foot also lets you sew cord into a bias strip to make welt or piping.
Use free-motion darning and stippling10 steps
  1. The darning/embroidery foot is optional and is not supplied.
  2. Install the darning plate.
  3. Switch off for foot/shank changes.
  4. Remove the foot shank and attach the darning/embroidery foot to the presser bar with its lever behind the needle-clamp screw.
  5. Press the foot firmly from behind with your index finger and tighten its screw.
  6. For darning, sew around the hole first to secure threads.
  7. Work the first row left to right, turn the work 90 degrees, then sew over the earlier stitching.
  8. A darning hoop is recommended.
  9. You move the fabric manually without the internal feed system; coordinate fabric movement with sewing speed.
  10. For stippling, select straight stitch and use the optional darning foot while sewing small meandering curves through the fabric and batting layers.
