Raise the bobbin thread5 steps
  1. Hold the upper thread in your left hand.
  2. Turn the handwheel toward you (counterclockwise), lowering then raising the needle.
  3. If the bobbin thread is difficult to raise, check that it is not trapped by the hinged cover or removable extension table.
  4. Gently pull the upper thread to bring the bobbin thread through the needle-plate hole.
  5. Lay both threads toward the rear under the presser foot.
Adjust thread tension7 steps
  1. The basic upper-tension setting is 4.
  2. Turn to a higher number to increase tension, or a lower number to reduce it.
  3. For straight stitching, balanced top/bottom stitches are normally desired: loose upper tension needs a higher number; overly tight upper tension needs a lower number.
  4. For zigzag and decorative sewing, a small amount of upper thread should appear on the underside; upper tension should generally be lower than for straight stitching.
  5. Bobbin tension is factory-set and does not need adjustment.
  6. No single setting suits every stitch, thread and fabric; the guide states that 90% of sewing falls between 3 and 5.
  7. Upper thread appearing beneath decorative work gives nicer stitches and less puckering.

Sewing

Instructions from the manual
Choose a stitch pattern3 steps
  1. Turn the pattern-selector dial in either direction to select a stitch.
  2. The manual shows straight-stitch and zigzag pattern groups for those stitch types.

Sew a blind hem7 steps
  1. The blind-hem pattern is for stretch fabrics.
  2. Always make a sewing test first.
  3. Turn the hem up to the required width and press.
  4. Fold it back against the fabric’s right side, leaving about 7 mm (1/4 inch) of the hem’s top edge projecting to the right of the fold, as illustrated.
  5. Sew slowly on the fold so the needle just catches one or two fabric threads.
  6. Unfold and press when finished.
  7. An optional blind-hem foot can make this easier.
Sew a four-step buttonhole11 steps
  1. Switch off for changing the foot.
  2. Replace the all-purpose foot with the buttonhole foot.
  3. Add the button diameter, thickness and 0.3 cm (1/8 inch) for bartacks to determine buttonhole length; mark it on the fabric.
  4. Align the foot marking with the starting fabric mark, then lower the foot with the marked buttonhole center aligned to the foot center.
  5. Always test on the intended fabric because density varies.
  6. Follow the illustrated four-step sequence using the pattern dial; raise the needle before turning to the next step.
  7. Avoid too many stitches in steps 2 and 4.
  8. Cut the buttonhole from both ends toward the middle with the seam ripper.
  9. Slightly reduced upper tension improves results.
  10. Use stabilizer for fine or stretchy fabrics.
  11. For stretch or knit fabric, heavy thread or cord is advisable; sew zigzag over it.
